I agree with this certainly but wanted to share a trick. If I need to find center of a stage, I draw a rectangle over the entire shape. The center grab buttons of the rectangle give me a great visual alignment to set up my guides. Then when I move graphics on the stage, I can easily see there center (with the center grab bars) and voila! Instant centering. I also do this with other quadrants so you can get to a fairly fine placement of what you need.
