Subdomains

Anyone know anything about subdomain names? Example: www.lectora.com is main site. community.trivantis.com is their subdomain for the community forum (no www). Do they have to be registered? Can you send email to them? If so, what does the email address look like? If you don't know, can you put me in touch with someone who does?
