Clicking Hyperlink Ends Animation?

Here's something funky... I have a page that contains an animated gif set up to play continuously. Also on the page is some hyperlinked text which, when clicked, displays a message window with (with a definition of the hyperlinked text). The animation plays just fine and keeps playing *until* you click on the hyperlinked text, at which point the animation stops (and remains stopped, even after closing the message window). Can anyone explain why this happens and whether there's any way to prevent it?
