Shorter answer variable for test question

This is not hard to do manually, but it is a real PAIN. I have a lot of tests that reach the maximum variable size (4k I believe?). This has happened in tests as small as 20 questions if the answers are a sentence long and if more than one answer applies.Currently I have to go into every question, and make the answer choices A, B, C, D, then create a seperate text block outside the question itself to display the Answer text. This way the Variable only has to maintain the letter selection instead of the sentence. I would love to see a check box to have that happen automaticly. Maybe an open to only use a preselected amount of charecters for the variable info or something. I spend hours doing this for most of my tests.
