Is the drag and drop quiz function poorly implemented?

I attempted to use the drag/drop quiz function but found it nearly useless. Am I using it correctly?
I have a question where I have 9 items which need to match up to one of two halfs of a graphic, as such:
................................................ image (two sides)
item 1

item 3
| ............|.............|
item 4
| ............|.............|
item 5
| ............|.............|
item 6
|_________________|
i.e. items (text) 1-3 should be dragged to left side of image, items 4-6 should be dragged to right side of image.
The problem is that I have little control over the drag/drop area placement. I have NO control over the size of the area (where the text should be dragged to). The drag/drop area is only the size of the text and/or it spans the entire length of the image.
Excuse me, I am kind of frustrated b/c with this the perfect question candidate for a drag/drop and now I find I cannot use it.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
