Lectora X - Bug (shift-enter - line break in quiz questions)
May 11, 2010 12:00 AM
I just confirmed this to be a problem with Lectora X and should be corrected in the next update.
The problem is that Lectora X (other versions unknown) allows a Shift-Enter to become a html line break (< b r / >). While this is expected and normal behavior, this is not acceptable on an LMS. If a line break exists in a quiz, you can expect behavior such as:
1. Running Quiz
On both the Mac and Windows, the Chrome and Safari browsers fail to start the Quiz section of the lesson.
The Quiz window will open and simply state... "Loading... [lesson name]...please wait." The background window will state, "Running
Courseware. Do not close this window...."
Summary:
Works with: IE8, Firefox
Fails with: Chrome, Safari
2. The Quiz end button fails
The last question "Submit Answer" button sends:
On Click Action:
Submit/Process Test/Survey
Target: Quiz AU name
The problem is that this button *does not work* (ON SOME BROWSERS). For instance, it works with IE8 but it does not work with Fire Fox
(Windows or Mac). Chrome and Safari cannot be tested because of issue #1.
Summary:
Works with: IE8
Fails with: Firefox, Chrome (did not start), Safari (did not start)
3. Attempting to run the test a second time, results in a LMS "FATAL ERROR".
After successfully completing the test with IE8 (the only browser that works), attempting to run the quiz for a second time, results in a LMS
"FATAL ERROR" on either IE8, Fire Fox, or Chrome.
Summary:
Works with: none
Fails with: IE8, Firefox, Chrome (did not start), Safari (did not start)
---- The above very bizarre problems confused a lot of experts.
I was only when I began testing my lessons on testtrack.scorm.com, I realized that the problem was with Lectora X's SCORM output AND NOT my LMS. Looking at the published HTML code, I immediately noted the line breaks within the quiz questions.
Looking at the Lectora quiz question, I found a high-bit ASCII character anywhere I had a shift-enter. This shift-enter also appears as a 'funny character' in the Lectora quiz editor (see attachment). I had originally used a shift-enter to correct a Lectora line space bug, whenever a fill-in-the-blank is used.
I have included images (originally prepared for Trivantis).
The bugs are:
- Lectora X should either not allow a shift-enter, or not allow a shift-enter to represent a line break, or flag problematic ASCII codes and line breaks on a toolsError Check
- Lectora X needs to correct the line spacing problem with fill-in-the-blank boxes
Both bugs have been acknowledged by Trivantis.
These problems set me back a week... hopefully, this information will help others.
