SBelzer's example is a good, no frills, distilled example. I think you would be hard pressed to copyright something that is that distilled or something like alert('ya mook'); as it is pretty much the interface to the browser AND a documented combination of functions executed to perform an action.However, if you have a process that reflects a complex, yet unique approach to solving a problem. I see no reason why you wouldn't copyright it, and certainly no reason why it wouldn't stand up in court. I think it depends on what it is. I think it BS that the guy who patented active browser objects was able to strongarm the industry and inconvenience every developer in the market. He saw the logical step (same as everyone else) and decided to patent it. Kind of like patenting 'removable fasteners to hold car wheels to the hub of a car'.
