Background Larger Than Published Course

It doesn't create an actual image with adjustable properties, and at no time during the background making process does it allow me to change the size of the background. I tried entering in the custom html, but my background went about a quarter of an inch across the top of the screen and then just stopped.

My course is only 786 x 540, but the background stretches accross the entire width of my screen. Is there a way to limit my background to the confines of my course, and will it make a difference if my course is centered or left justified?
