Custom Variable, Add-To action

Lectora Version x.4 (7611)

I helped a colleague set up a 'dashboard' page that launches 6 different captivate demos (published outside of the lectora). Once the user has launched one demo, a green checkmark displays next to it on the 'dashboard' page. To do this, we established a custom variable and an 'add to' action for each demo launch. (ie. add "D1" when demo 1 is launched; add "T2" when try-it 2 is launched; etc.). There is no communication b/t captivate and lectora, it's all done through lectora.

We've tried this with the custom variable's initial value as 0, or as empty. In both of these instances, the add-to doesn't work, and it just sets the variable to "0.". It's almost as though it's forcing the variable to be numeric, only.

We set the initial value of the custom variable to "a", and then it works...

Could someone provide some insight as to what's happening here?

I haven't had issue adding alpha characters to empty variables, before... is the problem adding alpha-and-numeric characters? What are the 'rules' here?

TIA
