you are correct, as long as you have the test properties set to grade the test and to include the test score into the overall score you should not have to do anything with the AICC_Score variable.
The only time you need to set the AICC_Score variable manually is when you want to force a score for a course that does not have test. In this case make sure you set the score prior to setting the AICC_Lesson_Status varaible. We use this when we want to launch/record something in SumTotal that does not require an assessment.
