Publishing - SCORM Disconnect??
April 7, 2016 12:00 AM
What is the publishing option for SCORM Disconnect? I guess I never really noticed it before. I tried searching out the knowledge base but found no results on it. There was a video done about publishing options, but it just skipped this option completely.
How does it differ from the regular SCORM and how does it compare to the offline publish option? Does it just combine the two, or is it fundamentally different?
Just curious. Thanks!

The published file does include a copy of an "offline version" copy of the title so you could iniate the course from outside of the LMS. I'm afraid I don't understand the full workings to say if once it was completed and you entered the LMS it would recognize that it's already been started. I know that you do have the option of uploading it to your own FTP so I would only have to assume you can. I'll pick the brain of someone here and see if they can help or respond to that point. As far as documentation while offline it appears to hold the data in an XML document which means you'd be able to see what information is being passed.
Does it have to be initiated from the LMS, or can you initially run it standalone from say a CD/DVD or off the desktop? The explanation says "to download SCORM..." which makes me think that it has to be initiated from an LMS, but does it really do anything differently, or does it just download the same file that's published from Lectora?
Is there any documentation on how this information is stored while offline? At least in my world, that capability alone is worth its weight in gold. Knowing how and where to store this information offline, but especially when there is no LMS at all.
Here's the official explanation from the v16 user guide:
The option is part of an evolving standard that enables users on learning management systems to download SCORM conformance materials for use in an off-line (not connected to the Internet) environment. The user completes the
published title, and when they have re-established Internet connectivity, the published title can update the host learning management system with the results of the user's interactions.
Essentially it creates a version of the course that can be downloaded and viewed whenever convenient but once it's linked back up the SCORM setting can report to the LMS. I've heard of being used in instances were internet is not always guaranteed like for traveling employees or ones who work in manufacturing.
The offline SCORM option works only with CourseMill, and only when the course is downloaded from CourseMill. SCORM does not have offline as part of the standard so there is no way to make it work generically with an LMS.
