Trying to Learn About Variables and How and When to Set?

Let me ask you (and anyone else): When you first started to work with SCORM/Lectora, etc., how did you learn about what the different variables were, how to set them, when to set them, what problems appeared when they weren't set correctly, etc?
I understand that one can learn by doing and asking questions but are there any resources out there that define these variables and what they should be, problems, etc? I have a copy of my LMS's descriptions but what I'm not sure of is, in general, when I create a SCORM compliant course using Lectora, are the variables (for example: LMSSetValue("cmi.core.lesson_status", "completed") something that I am supposed to code or is this generated automatically by the LMS? How do I know where and when in the authoring software to set these values so that errors such as I received don’t appear?
