Question Counter

Hi,
I'm trying to wrap my head around a counter variable used when adding questions. I'm very and I stress very new to Lectora. So any assistance or recommendations you can suggest would be wonderful. I want to add multiple choice that will allow users two chances to answer a question correctly. First attempt indicates wrong answer, 2nd attempt indicates that answer is incorrect and they would be re-routed back to the main page. I have all that in place but just one thing is not working....my counter.
How do a create the question so that a counter is added. Does anyone have a sample?
I've created an action called counter.
action name: counter
on: mouse click
action: modify variable:
Target (don't know what to put here. I saw a sample of a wbt that had a counter and it had the word counter next to the question (example: question1counter) in the drop down menu. All I could see are question0001, question0002, etc and nothing like question1counter. Am I supposed to add a new variable here.
Value: 1
Modification Type: Add to variable.
Where would I put the counter.....
Also, are there any suggestions on great reference guides for Lectora, can't seem to find any books?
Thanks in advance.
