Journal or Notes Feature for Student

We are trying to make a journal or a notes feature within a course to have a page where the student can type in their thoughts throughout the course. We are using the Oracle/Peoplesoft ELM for our LMS and only tracking back AICC code for completion or completion with scoring. If I use a retained variable and the student at some point clears their IE cookies, will it also clear this notes page?
