Share your thoughts on what's best new feature in Lectora 11
February 13, 2013 12:00 AM
What small great things I found so far:
- ability to edit identical properties of multiple selected objects at once. Much advertised before, I know. However, doesn't work for all properties (e.g. action delay in seconds).
- action pane (select an item -> Action -> Action pane) that lists all actions in a convenient manner. I wish actions were editable directly from the pane though.
- new 'execute JS' action (replaces gotoURL and modifyVariable workarounds)
- slide thumbnail view
- new 'edit' windows for External HTML objects that support copying and pasting code better, although you still cannot tab your code
I miss:
- non-ribbon interface (although I love MS Office ribbon interface that autoadjusts itself based on context + offers the little popup contextual menu). I want all functionality to be one click away, not multiple clicks.
- especially the ability to have the properties window be docked and always visible
- html object names directly visible (now you have to click on a microscopic icon in Properties to bring up the Description popup)
I wish:
- ability to paste HEX color codes in color pickers
So, what do you think? Share your findings, tips and ideas!

For what we do, I'm most excited about events to mp3 and mp4. Also, the ability to randomize answers was long overdue and of course the ability to edit multiple objects like you mentioned.
We will be able to add events to mp3s??? That will be FANTASTIC!!

Could anyone demo this please? I couldn't get mp3 to fire off events :/
One huge frustration is that I can no longer use the tab key to navigate the object properties. Say if you want to input x, y, width, and height values, it was much quicker to hit tab to proceed to the next value. Now I have to use the mouse. Not to mention that, with the properties window, you could hit ctr + tab to go through the various properties tabs to find whatever you needed, whereas the ribbon spreads all the properties out so you have to go searching.
Yes, it's great we can now change properties of multiple objects, but with all the extra mouse clicks I am not sure it's really going to save me much time in the long run.
Also, I was disappointed to see that their YouTube streaming function still does not have an option to display closed-captions, which makes it useless for us.
I really dislike the ribbons. Like someone said earlier, I don't want to have to click twice to find a tool. (And I'm often clicking 3 or 4 times trying to find the right ribbon.) I do like that there is a paragraph spacing tool in the main ribbon.
Have anyone tried Tin Can? What does it allow you to do? Can you put the published files anywhere and it communicates with LMS without the need to launch from LMS?
Thanks,
I know, I've done that. Works in preview, doesn't work in any browser online or offline.

It should work in the same way as before with FLV files. Add an MP3 to your title, in the properties, click on "Sync Events", if you need to add events, click on "Set Event Timings", then add whatever events you need. Save the file, and close the editor, and the events should be in the list. Then add actions to the events (I just added a quick display message action).
Then, when you play the audio, the event should fire. The nice thing is that it works across all platforms now, including the iPad!
Now if we could just get Apple to allow Audio to auto-start on a page......

Since its a streaming video Lectora can't access the video to actually embed an event. I would recommend getting a app to convert the YouTube video to MP4. There are many free converter apps online.
I can not stand tabs. I hated them in Microsoft Office and I hate them here. I am clicking to much to see the information I am looking for. I would like pull off windows (like Adobe products have) that I can quicly look at to see object properties all at once, everthing about an action ect. There is to much information to confine to a tab.
I really hate tabs! Tabs are not cool!....Pull off dialogs/windows and Bowties are cool!

I am referring to the captions uploaded to YouTube. Why would Lectora need to embed an event?
I'd be okay with Tabs if I could customize them like in Office, select my own buttons etc.

I, too, am not a ribbon fan and, when I was watching the Lectora 11 demo webinar, was dismayed to see how much clicking I'd have to do to get to things that are now all available from just a click of a toolbar button (I run Lectora v 10.6 with virtually all of the toolbars turned on.) However, I felt a little better after I saw that you could create custom buttons at the top (forgot what the feature was technically called) for whatever menu items you want to -- I'm definitely going to be testing the limit of that! I'm hoping I can get at least all of the stuff I use very frequently crammed onto buttons up there.... Have you tried playing with that yet?

Oh geez. Thanks. Really cool feature. Why would you hide it under an obscure tiny button? How about a short overview of Lectora 11 for pro developers?
I agree, ssneg. I don't know why they hid such a useful feature, but the ability to target anything on screen has made a world of difference in potential. Coming from a graphic design background, I don't have the knowledge to create an overview myself, but it would definitely benefit Trivantis to hire a designer/developer to showcase some really cool features.

The non-working tab functionality is extremely annoying. I've gotten so used to doing it that when I try to edit properties now, I wind up typing the X and Y values in the same box.
I would have to say the ability to assign custom classes to objects has given me the biggest boost to quality of work. GSAP and jQuery integration is much easier and more straightforward.

I know it's not the same as full customization, but we do have the new tiny Quick Access toolbar, which is customizable to an extent. It appears right underneath the ribbon and you can add any command from any of the ribbons. It seems buggy though. The button to add symbols works fine off the ribbon, but not from the Quick Access bar.

What I do now, is this:
a) put all objects I want to animate in a group
b) loop through the ogXXX.childArray and convert all group items into a JQ object
c) animate JQ object
However, this is convenient only for title-level objects, because they have the same id in every page (e.g. animated menus).
When it comes to similar yet different objects like subtitle text on each page, classes should be really cool.

If you haven't already, check out the self-paced demo available on our website: http://lectora.com/click-and-learn-self-paced-course-lectora/
You can access this via Lectora U > How-To Courses, or from Lectora's Getting Started Screen or Help Menu.
Also, keep an eye out for upcoming Inspiration Wednesday webinars - we definitely plan to showcase version 11 features in more detail.
Finally, I find the best way to add an item to the Quick Access toolbar is to right-click on the item in the ribbon, and select "Add to Quick Access Toolbar".
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Laura

We are aware of the loss of tabbing functionality within object properties and this is being addressed. Please look for this capability in a future update coming soon.

How are you selecting multiple objects? I have tried Shift+click and Ctrl+click but can't select multiple objects unless they are on the same page. I want to change basic properties on several text blocks on multiple pages.
No, you can't do it on multiple pages, unfortunately (Trivantis, take note!)
