Desktop Viewing Versus Mobile Viewing

I am creating a learning module, and I would like different dimensions/features when a user is taking the course on a desktop/laptop/tablet/phone. I'm wondering what the code/javascript/techie feature is that I can put as an action at the beginning of the course to "read" how the user is viewing the course...and then send them to the correct module.

I guess I could put a quick question at the beginning, with clickable buttons that take the view to the correct version of the course....but thought that there was probably something "slicker" than that.

Any ideas?

PS - as an add on...does anyone know the recommended page dimensions for desktop/laptop/tablet/phone viewing?
