Variable not retaining a non breaking space when title is saved

I've got a variable that all I need in it is a single space (ah space - that final frontier). The space is used to set the initial characteristics of a text box (change contents - add to) that's displaying numbers (like a dial pad) so subsequent numbers entered are displayed in order typed and not added up like a calculator.
Every time I save the course the variable that supposed to have just this single space in gets purged to have nothing in it. Apparently Lectora X.6 (8458) is purging the space. Is there an ascii escape sequence I could use instead - or anyone got a simple workaround?
