variable default values

Has anyone out there found a problem with variables that they created that seems to be caused by the default value that was assigned.We have found several instances where we have created variables with a default value of '0' (zero) and when the value changed to '1' a process would be triggered. The problem was that it worked sometimes but not all the time. We then changed the default value to something other than '0' like '3', when the value was changed to '1' the process triggered properly.Any ideas please let me know. It happened to two different developers working independently of each other, but the same fix worked for both. If I find out anything I will repost. I am going to Trivantis next week so maybe I will have an answer then.
