To Open a EXCEL File on click

Have you tested this from a webserver or only from your desktop? Not sure why a webserver would make a difference if .doc and .pdf is working, but I've seen stranger things. I just placed a .xls file into a title, published to html, and it worked fine from my desktop. Is it an .xls file or some other type?
