Need help with action to close a pop up window

I have a course wherein certain words have hyperlinks applied that, on click, open a pop up window with a definition of the word. I would like to apply an action (or multiple actions) to my back & next navigation buttons that will close the pop up so that learners don't have a dozen windows open. Thought or suggestions? Cheers!
