How to implement a big movie in a LMS?
April 4, 2017 12:00 AM
Good Morning :-)
yesterday i filmed a workshop (lengh: 3 hours, size: 1,5 Gb). I mad capitelmarkers with camtasia and a small menu.
And now the question: knows anyone the best way to get the movie on our LMS (ilias), so that all students can watch it.
1,5 GB definite too big, maybe someone had the same problem :-) Or exists there a better way in lectora?
nice greetings and a nice day, marcel

Another option I find better/easier than handbrake is Freemake Video Converter. As the name states, it's free and works wonderfully. If you go with this make sure you read the installation carefully because it will ask to install a bunch of bloatware (because it's free).
You might wanna use https://handbrake.fr/ It is a great tool to quickly convert video to a multitude of video formats.
H264 is in my option the best choice, and you can create easily multiple versions ranging from lowest quality to top quality. Then its easy for a client to compare what quality/size ratio he prefers and choose that.

I would not add a single big movie. I doubt you're going to get anyone to sit through a three (3) hour movie in one sitting and Lectora doesn't bookmark video location (unless you add it yourself). I suggest you edit the video and break it into logical sections under 30 minutes each.
Does Freemake has the option to set a bitrate ? Because thats what HandBrake excels at, setting low bitrates with medium to good quality. If you go to low, you offcourse get qualityloss...
Which video format is it? 1,5 GB seems to be huge for a 3 hour mp4.

Hey, thx for your tips.
i converted the videofile in mp4 (H264) and i did it with handbrake :-) maybe i took the wrong settings.
Has anyone nice settings? i mad a render queue with different settings, but the smallest result was 1,5 GB.
Today i will download Freemake Video Converter, maybe i get a better result.
i read something about iframes, do you have experience with that?
And for Lectora i have to build a Scorm file, i think this is the best way!

I am assuming that if you want a create a SCORM package, you are doing so because it will be reporting to the LMS.... for example will you incorporate a quiz... or simply set it so the LMS records the activity as "completed" after viewing. You mentioned "iframes"... if you are using Moodle, for example, which uses iframes in displaying SCORM settings, you will also need to take into consideration the dimensions of the iframe if users are not viewing fullscreen.
I agree with Darrel... it would be best to break the video down into segments...
hey, thx that was a really good idea! yeah... it works :-)
I splitted the video in small segments and put it in a blog in ours LMS. In Lectora i made direct links to the videofiles in the blog. This works really nice. For a better navigation i have created a menue in lectora, so that the users can jump exactly to the right videofile.
