How about making the course interesting? Try Scenario-based learning - a Michael Allen supported idea. See his latest book on Design for a lot of stuff but to me it is all around the target. I have taken Allen's stuff along with 5 other author's and a couple of years of my experience and boiled it down into a step by step method for creating really interesting engaging courses.
