I was able to go into the Resource Manager and rename those shapes before the merge. Granted, it wasn't an easy fix, as the Resource Manager interface is deplorable (to save time, I wanted to keep the shape name but just precede with "Proj01" from the clipboard; the paste feature won't even save time here). But I did make it work, with the caveat that it produced extra labor for me--still, nothing that would make me warn others away from it altogether.
