alignment issues

I'm having difficulties with the alignment options and I wonder if anybody else has experienced this. I have 2 objects -- a photo and a rectangle. The rectangle is behind the photo and will serve as a border. When I select the 2 objects and align the vertical center, they align correctly. But then when I align the horizontal center, the vertical alignment is lost. Thus, it seems I can only align one of the other (horizontal or vertical center), not both. Anybody else experienced this? Are there any fixes or is this a bug? I've also noticed this issue when using the arrow keys to change the X or Y position. If I change the Y position, it typically also changes the X position. Rather frustrating.
