Subtract from Variable not working (version X.4)

Good day folks,
I've set a variable in my course that gets added to, or subtracted from, depending which option my learner chooses.
In testing, I've added a text box that displays the contents of my counter, and it adds just fine, but won't subtract from the value. I have also tried adding -1 to the value, no joy.
Help save what I have left of my hair from being pulled out by the roots?
