Reference Lists - Why?

Hi. I am developing a compliance course for a client that needs to include references. I don't see much about reference lists in the help files - just how to insert one and how to define the scope (I'm using v9). I'm wondering why would one use this feature as opposed to just a pop-up page? I'm also stumped with what to do with the reference object when it is inserted. How do I insert text into it?Also - where do most designers typically place this object? At the end of the course but before the final assessment?Many thanks for your suggestions!
