Re: Creating Interactive and Interesting 508 Compliant Courses in Lectora
March 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Hi,
I am a new Lectora Inspire developer and am tasked with creating a 508 compliant course for a federal government grant project.
I understand that when I set up the course templates I would choose the 508 compliance settings. In addition, there are some templates/frames available that Lecora developed to be 508 complaint for CDC.
Assuming I have a 508 compliant template and am using the 508 settings within Lectora, here are some questions about content development:
- Can I create several screen layouts or will the 508 settings/requirements limit me to one large undivided content area?
- Is there a way to create complex tables and upload them to Lectora and have them be 508 compliant?
- What types of activities, interactions, and knowledge reviews can be implemented in keeping with 508 standards?
- Can I develop 508 compliant flash content outside of Lectora and import it into the program?
I realize there are new ways to make flash content 508 accessible now --by developing it using Adobe Flash CS4 and activating and populating all of the compliance features. Does anybody know if this content will upload and function in Lectora?
Thanks for any information you can provide.
Diane B.

Hi dbanner,
Welcome to the Lectora community!
In terms of screen layout, you can use Frames if you want, but keep in mind these are not SCORM compliant. Without frames, you will have one undivided page - you can use graphic elements to create sections on the page (a header, footer, area for navigation, etc.).
To create complex tables, you'll need add an HTML extension object. You can write the HTML in a separate document and attach it, or use the Edit window and paste it in directly from the object's properties. There is a sample file in our 508 How-To course if you want an example to reference (select the pop-up on the Complex data tables page).
Almost all objects and question types are still supported. If you turn on "Web Accessibility Settings" from your Title Options (assuming you're on v11) any non-supported objects, questions, and options will be disabled for you.
SWF and FLV files can be imported directly into Lectora as Flash or Video objects and these will just be added to the page and should import and function just fine.
You can learn more about web accessibility in the Appendix of our Information Center (the Help within the product). We also have a recorded webinar available on accessible learning - #90. How to Put the Zing in Accessible eLearning.
