General Questions about Creating 508 Compliant Courses
March 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Hi,
I am a new Lectora Inspire developer and am tasked with creating a 508 compliant course for a federal government grant project.
I understand that when I set up the course templates I would choose the 508 compliance settings. In addition, there are some templates/frames available that Lecora developed to be 508 complaint for CDC.
Assuming I have a 508 compliant template and am using the 508 settings within Lectora, here are some questions about content development:
- Can I create several screen layouts or will the 508 settings/requirements limit me to one large undivided content area?
- Is there a way to create complex tables and upload them to Lectora and have them be 508 compliant?
- What types of activities, interactions, and knowledge reviews can be implemented in keeping with 508 standards?
- Can I develop 508 compliant flash content outside of Lectora and import it into the program?
I realize there are new ways to make flash content 508 accessible now --by developing it using Adobe Flash CS4 and activating and populating all of the compliance features. Does anybody know if this content will upload and function in Lectora?
Thanks for any information you can provide.

Ok, in a nutshell, here are the answers in RED. (Not 508 compliant, I know.)
Assuming I have a 508 compliant template and am using the 508 settings within Lectora, here are some questions about content development:
- Can I create several screen layouts or will the 508 settings/requirements limit me to one large undivided content area? You can layout whatever you want, but avoid frames. Essentially, visual layout doesn't matter to 508 as long as all the information is conveyed properly. UNLESS the layout itself is somehow part of the content... Ultimately - you wanna have 50 little module squares with content on the screen? - Fine. Just make sure they read in the correct order.
- Is there a way to create complex tables and upload them to Lectora and have them be 508 compliant? You can try, but you'll be better off either re-creating them in Lectora, or attaching them as a compliant PDF.
- What types of activities, interactions, and knowledge reviews can be implemented in keeping with 508 standards? You should stick to T/F and Multiple Choice. There's ways to use the others, but I've had nothing but trouble with clients and getting them to work right.
- Can I develop 508 compliant flash content outside of Lectora and import it into the program? You can, but you should add an additional description (hidden) that will cover the interaction's content and purpose, just to cover your butt. But who uses Flash anymore? For all the people who still use Flash, I have some AOL CD's that I'd love to send you. :-) (Just kidding.)
I realize there are new ways to make flash content 508 accessible now --by developing it using Adobe Flash CS4 and activating and populating all of the compliance features. Does anybody know if this content will upload and function in Lectora? Creating compliant Flash is MUCH more than just activating the accessibility pane and checking some checkboxes. You'll need to write a ton of AS too if you want it to be truly "508 Compliant." Unless they're on a mobile device or Ipad. You're better off doing the entire Flash interaction in Lectora itself. (My 2 cents.)
I've been using Lectora for over 6 years and received my first 508 course. I've published the course and not sure why the buttons and images are not showing up their ALT tags? Have no clue why it's not showing up?
Thanks and more questions to come.
Gina
