Well, I guess you could have a delayed action to hide it but that would be risky.
What I do is to put all the menu selections at level 2 in the menu. On level 1 I have one blank space and no other text and code the mouseover for the Top Level to be transparent all the time. Then I place that over the button I want clicked. You can control the size of the top level by making the font bigger or smaller. That way when the learner mouses over the transparent menu, it shows the 2nd level. When the mouse moves away, the menu hides.
