OK, I've stopped kicking myself.

OK, NOW I'm done.
I've used "dead" buttons routinely over large areas of the screen to keep the student from clicking stuff they shouldn't click, but it NEVER dawned on me to use a screen-sized "live" button to resolve this. Not even close to considering that as the answer.
Actually, I ended up using both the onBlur (to close the child) and the screen-sized button (to start up the next action), and now this bugaboo is history.
