The difference between the two is a list box will allow you to select more than one answer whereas a drop down list will only allow you to select one answer. So if you are using a multiple choice question with only one answer, it will use a drop down list. If your mc question has more than one answer, then it will use a list box. It uses the same fundamentals as the radio button vs. the checkbox.
