Drag and drop - text items won't stick

I have been trying all day to get this one drag and drop question to work.

I used a single image with drop points. I created 7 text boxes to pair with the 7 different drop points. I placed the drop points of exactly or near exact same size.

I am not using distractors.

I've tried this as a 7 point question, 1 point question, feedback of various types or no feedback, etc...

When I preview or Run, the drag item texts do NOT STICK to the drop points.

If I just give up and submit, it says I did not answer the question. Aaarrghh!!

In Debug, I just get the following every time I try to drop one of the texts "saveVariable for Question_0001 to []

None of the tutorials I have seen require me to do any additional work on variables.

Suggestions?

One other piece of info -- at one point I put the drop point at the very top left corner of the image and I was able to get that associated text box to stick. But I have not been able to replicate it.
