Custom Radio Buttons won';t unselect

I added my own custom radio buttons, for this example lets just say R1 and R2.
Usually I set actions so that when R1 is selected, change contents of R2 to empty and vice versa so that only one radio button can be selected at a time. This has always been fine when using the default radio buttons.
Once I added my own custom radio buttons, this functionality no longer works. I then tried on the Lectora alternatives and this still did not work, however once changing them to 'Default' and without amending any actions, the functionality was restored.
I know this can be achieved with CSS but raising the issue that I'm having.

Edit: I just discovered the Radio Button Group function. Now I feel stupid.
