checkbox or radio button

Should be a simple problem! I'm making multiple choice Questions and i keep getting radio buttons instead of check boxes. I set checkboxes in preferences (radio was never selected anyway). even when i copy and paste a checkbox style Question and i edit it it goes to radio buttons and forgets it was checkbox. This to occured midway through building module. don't know why!
