What is the variable that keeps track of the exam questions when selected 'random'

I would like the user to select or enter, the number of questions he/she wants to answer from a bank of questions and do it in a random manner. Therefore, I need to input the number of questions the user enters and then modify the variable used to keep track of the random selection of pages. In this manner, I could change the number of random question to show the user per his/her entry.
Does anybody know which variable is used for store the number of pages when selecting Random in the 'Content' tab at an Exam?
