Varibles with action

I have a button with an on click goto, but i also want a separate action on that button for a variable, so i can have a an image change when the assignment is started and a different image when the assignment is completed. I can only get the variable and that action to work seperatly when the action (click go to ) for the button is not on.Sorry hard to explain. Any suggestions??
