Well I'm not sure how the variables are being passed to ROM but I assume it's via JavaScript, so if you haven't found another host yet - one workaround might be to write a custom JavaScript function that creates a variable with a hyphen in it and sets it's value to the lectora equivalent and then sends that one along...
