Table of Contents CSS Classes

Can anyone give me an example of using the CSS Classes option in the Appearance of Table of Contents window. (See attached screenshot.) Seems this should be able to be used to create classes for active, hover, visited, etc. links. But I can't figure out how that should work. Thanks!
