I think this is one of the problems you are faced with rapid e-learning tools, in that they have a very inflexible approach to building content - especially for the likes of the seasoned developers.I would presonally take the time to build a good template in a tool like Lectora (or as was in Authorware), and once these templates have been confirmed - the speed then comes from the utilisation of this, along with using coding to further enhance the power from the authoring system.I am sure most of the people here would agree?
