After digging a bit deeper, I realized that I was making things way more complicated than they needed to be. All I needed to do was set the variable at the page level and have the .swf retrieve it with an ExternalInterface call.
Also, I found that you can see the HTML-published name of an object by going to File > Preferences and selecting "Show HTML-published object names in object properties".
