Partial Scoring on Multiple Choice Questions

In my course, I have multiple choice questions where I want to be able to award partial points for a correct answer.
The points are written to a variable.
Originally, I set the individual check boxes to modify a variable with the Select/Change option
in properties for the check box, and that worked fine. The only problem is that
if the learner clicks on, off, and on the correct answer, the learner gets more points that she should.
I don't know another method to extract partial credit and add it to a variable.
Any suggestions?
