Organize Library Objects into Categories?
July 23, 2013 12:00 AM
I swear I used to be able to do this, and I apologize if I'm missing something obvious, but isn't it possible to put Lectora Library Objects (.awo files) into different categories in the My Library tab?
I am able to add and name a new subfolder in the Library Objects folder, but I seem to be able only to import media into this subfolder, and not .awo files. I can move the .awo files into the folder in windows explorer, but then when I navigate to it in the My Library tab, the library object is not visible.

This certainly does sound like a bug, and I'll be sure it's documented as such. Thanks for posting!
hmm... that's rather interesting... I just tried what you said (adding a subfolder in explorer, and putting .awo's in there) and they don't show up for me either. They do show up if it's in the folder called Library Objects... but as soon as I move it to another folder in that directory, they disappear from Lectora.
I know this isn't helpful, but just wanted to let you know that you aren't alone! Seems like a bug to me, unless Trivantis made the conscious decision to force people to keep library objects in a single folder (which would be a pain).
I wanted to mention a few tips and tricks for working with Library Objects - I know this doesn't solve the issue of having the ability to use sub-folders, but I'm hoping these options will be helpful as workarounds in the interim until this issue is resolved.
First, if you right-click on the white space within your My Library, you have the option to select Details View. With multiple library objects, seeing a list view might be easier than searching through icons.
Second, when you're in Details View, you'll notice a column for description. If you select a Library Object, and then select Properties, you have the ability to add a description as well as keywords to the properties of the library object.
The description can be helpful for sorting within the details view, but what I find more helpful is the ability to search on keywords. So, once you've added keywords to a Library Object, and you're in My Library, typing in the keyword will begin to automatically filter the results.
I missed the Lectora 12 webinar today - we are relatively late adopters of 11, was hoping to find out you can categories Library Objects and I just missed it. But looks like you're saying that feature isn't available?
It appears that this is not an option directly from Lectora. In the past you could at least navigate to where you wanted to save it. Guess not now.
When I had that need in the past, the lib was very hard to get to so I kept the folder open on my desktop and just dragged and dropped onto Lectora. Today, uour current workaround is to save it as a lib obj, open the Library folder in Windows and leave it open, move it to the right folder in Windows and drag and drop it from there instead fo the Library tab in Lectora.
The webinar today focused on new features and enhancements for Lectora v12 - and the recorded webinar will be posted soon to the Lectora U section of the website. The fix for folders for Library Objects wasn't covered in the webinar session, but it's certainly on our list of items that need attention.
Great news! In Lectora 12 you can add folders to organize your library objects.
Select My Library > Library Objects. Then click the Category button. A new folder is created that you can rename. You can then drag library objects into the folder to organize them.
Alternatively, right-click and select Show in Windows Explorer and add folders and organize library objects there - the updates will be reflected in the Media Library.
