Looking at this from a different perspective, the User is the one who needs to be modified not the programme.Have you included an instructions page before the assessment, telling them what to do. As the main issue seems to be them closing the programme before they should.Another option would be to have a Submit button that they just can't ignore. Maybe a bright flashing animation or the like.
