Lesson Progression-What do you do?

I was kinda curious how everyone progresses their lessons. We use a couple of formats. 1. Slide by slide (default, easy to script and input, downside is the continuous screen refreshed and default IE clicking noise)2. Event Marker progression using embeded event markers in flv audio to change the text and graphics boxes until the audio track changes. What I would like to do if possible, is figure a way to go to a specific event marker with a button push. Basically, let the student skip backwards and forwards when they want, but have the lesson progress at a measured pace when they don't interact with the controls. I would have a silent flv with marker points controlling the pace, but haven't figured a way to skip forward and back on marker events (and I acknowledge up front that there may be a easy way to do this that I have overlooked)
