Actually this is a problem with IE's PNG support. IE does not suport alpha transparency of PNG images and will not properly display PNG files (will distort the edges). The better way to understand this problem is to search the web about it or this page (www.alistapart.com/articles/pngopacity/) does a decent job of explaining the problem and showing a work around it as well.
