Well, I have literally hundreds of screen shots in 3 courses and we simply use Alt-PrtScr button, paste into PowerPoint, reduce 65% (because target audience screens are limited to 800x600), crop as needed, put a 4pt gray border around them to petty them up a bit, and save directly from PowerPoint as a GIF.
