Thanks, that almost works. Typing text works fine, answer is retained and can be retrieved. But the way 'back', from hidden question to shown text box does not always work properly. Text winds up in hidden entry box, but is not always copied back to the shown text box. Eg it works fine when navigating back to this particular question, but not when resuming from previous session. Is this a timing problem?
