Some ideas. 2006 w/SP5 is very stable with one exception - deleting grouped objects using by selecting them on the page rather than in the left pane. When the last one in the group is deleted, it frequently dies. 2007 I have had some problems but nothing like you are describing. Possibly some corrupted files, especially if you are copying an old title to build a new one. Have you sent some of the failing titles to support? I would be glad to take a quick look too.
