Equipment to Record Audio

I am looking for equipment recommendations to record audio into Audio editor (2007version). We have upgraded our sound card but are still getting inconsistent quality and a tin cannish sound. Is there a special type of microphone or multi media headset that will produce a higher quality of sound? Do we need something that is noise cancelling. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
