Does re-saving mp3 files degrade them?

Any Audio Gurus out there?Does opening an mp3 audio file, editing it, then re-saving, compress it more, resulting in additional audio degradation?It is my understanding that opening jpeg files, editing them, and then saving them results in additional image degradation.Do mp3 files react the same way as jpeg files (each time you save them they degrade more)?
